The Portuguese bank partners with the “Explica-me” (Explain to Me) literacy project, an initiative that supports students and promotes social inclusion in the region.
Lisbon, June 12, 2026 – Bison Bank announces its support for Cáritas Diocesana de Leiria-Fátima through the “Explica-me” project, which provides academic tutoring to children and young people from low-income families. This initiative reinforces the importance of equal opportunities in access to education and seeks to encourage institutions and companies to get involved and contribute to the development of similar projects.
Created in 2015, the “Explica-me” project operates as a weekly academic tutoring program run by young volunteers. The initiative takes place every Saturday during the school year and aims to bridge learning gaps for children from financially vulnerable families identified by the institution’s social services. For many of these young people, who do not have this type of support at home, the project represents essential assistance in their academic journey.
Bison Bank’s support comes in the wake of the floods earlier this year, which worsened the vulnerability of many families in the Leiria region. In this context, the continuity of educational support became even more critical to ensure stability and future prospects for the youth. Sensitive to its social responsibility, Bison Bank seeks to help address a community need and mitigate the impact of this situation on these students’ education.
Nelson Costa, Service Director of Cáritas Diocesana de Leiria-Fátima, highlights the importance of the partnership: “These contributions are fundamental for the continuity of ‘Explica-me,’ especially at a time when the stability of the families we support has been put to the test. This way, we can ensure that these children and young people continue to have the educational support they need to build a future with more opportunities.”
In turn, Bison Bank frames this support within its social responsibility policy, which focuses on promoting literacy and education. “Supporting the ‘Explica-me’ project is a way for us to respond to a concrete community need and stand alongside those who are making a difference on the ground,” says António Henriques, CEO of Bison Bank. “The January storms that affected the Leiria region clearly showed us the vulnerability of communities to extreme phenomena, but also the extraordinary resilience of the population. Literacy, whether financial or general, is an essential tool for reconstruction and long-term resilience. It is in times of crisis that a lack of tools becomes an even greater hardship. Supporting the ‘Explica-me’ project is, for us, a way to respond to a concrete need and invest in the most valuable asset of any community: the future of its children. We believe that by ensuring these young people have the necessary support to keep their education on track, we are contributing to a stronger, fairer society that is better prepared for the challenges ahead.”
